RV Water Heater Problems We Fix Every Week

Your RV water heater works fine until it doesn't - and it usually doesn't at the worst possible time. Standing in a cold shower at a campsite, or discovering a leak in the wet bay the morning you're supposed to leave, is not how anyone wants to spend a trip.

Most water heater problems are diagnosable and fixable in a single visit. A failed thermocouple, a bad heating element, a tripped ECO switch, a corroded anode rod port - these are not mystery problems. They have known causes and known fixes. What they require is a technician who has seen them before and knows what to look for.

We have been servicing RV water heaters in North Alabama since 1993. Our RVTI-certified technicians trained under Brandon Galbreath, the National Champion of RV Techs® - the highest individual credential in the RV service industry. When your water heater comes in, it gets diagnosed properly, not guessed at.

Common RV Water Heater Problems

Whether you have a tank unit or tankless, propane or electric, these are the problems we see most often.

No Hot Water at All

The most common call we get. Could be the bypass valve still in winterize position, a tripped reset button, an empty propane tank, a failed igniter, a dead heating element, or a bad thermostat. We check each in sequence to find the actual cause rather than swapping parts at random.

Lukewarm Water Only

Getting warm but not hot water usually points to a partially bypassed tank, a weak propane flame on tankless units, low inlet water pressure can also trigger this. We measure output temperature and work backward from there. No guessing, just fixing

Water Heater Won't Ignite

If you hear clicking but no ignition, some common causes are a failed igniter, a dirty or cracked thermocouple, no propane, or low gas pressure. Or If the unit ignites then shuts off quickly, the flame sensor may not be detecting the flame or LP flow could be the culprit. We will take precise diagnostic steps to get you back to camping fast.

Leaking Water Heater

Turn off the water supply and the heater immediately when you see a leak. Leaks can come from the pressure relief valve, a failed fitting, a cracked tank lining, or a loose connection at the inlet or outlet. Some are inexpensive fixes. A cracked tank usually means replacement. Do not run a leaking water heater.

Hot Water Runs Out Fast

On tank units, running out of hot water quickly can just be because of the size of the tank, heavy scale buildup reducing tank capacity, or a partial bypass of the tank. If you are consistently running out and your tank is in good shape, a tank-to-tankless upgrade could solve your problems by providing continuous hot water without the wait.

Tripping the Breaker

A water heater that trips the breaker on electric mode typically has a shorted heating element drawing excess current, a wiring fault, or a grounding problem. Running the water heater and other high-draw appliances on the same circuit at the same campsite pedestal can also cause this. We test element resistance and wiring before recommending a fix.

Brands We Service

We work on all major RV water heater brands. Your unit has a specific manufacturer, model, and set of components - we diagnose based on what is actually in your RV, not a generic process.

Parts in Stock

RV Water Heater Repair: Common Questions

Why is there no hot water in my RV?

The most common causes are a tripped reset button on the water heater, the bypass valve left in the winterize position, an empty propane tank, a failed igniter or thermocouple, a blown heating element on electric mode, or a failed thermostat. Many of these are straightforward repairs. If you have checked the basics and still have no hot water, call us at (256) 571-9399 and we will diagnose the actual cause.

How much does RV water heater repair cost?

Cost depends entirely on what is wrong. A thermocouple or anode rod replacement is on the lower end. A heating element, thermostat, or igniter board is mid-range. A full unit replacement costs more but is sometimes the right call on an older unit with multiple problems. We diagnose the actual problem before recommending any repair so you only pay for what is needed.

What brands of RV water heaters do you repair?

We service Suburban, Atwood, Dometic, Girard, Furrion, Fogatti, RecPro, Truma AquaGo, Aqua-Hot, Hydro-Hot, and Oasis by ITR. We are an authorized Truma Service Partner and carry Truma parts in stock. For hydronic systems including Aqua-Hot and Hydro-Hot, see our dedicated hydronic page.

My RV water heater is leaking. What should I do?

Turn off the water heater and the water supply immediately to prevent further damage. A leak can come from a failed pressure relief valve, a corroded anode rod port, a cracked tank, a failed fitting, or a loose connection. Some leaks are inexpensive fixes. A cracked tank typically means replacement. Do not continue running a leaking water heater. Call us at (256) 571-9399.

Can you upgrade my RV from a tank water heater to tankless?

Yes. We perform tank-to-tankless upgrades and LP-only to dual fuel conversions. See our tankless water heater page for full details, or call us at (256) 571-9399 to discuss your specific unit.

How often should I replace the anode rod in my RV water heater?

Most manufacturers recommend inspecting the anode rod annually and replacing it when it is more than 75% depleted. A failed anode rod allows the tank to corrode from the inside out. Replacing it on schedule is the single most cost-effective maintenance item on a tank water heater. We carry anode rods for Suburban and Atwood units and can replace yours during any service visit.
